Dashcam Stops Working for Days

My new dashcam stopped working for days. And I just bought it too!

One day, my Rexing V1LG wouldn’t turn on. I plugged its charger into my car’s DC outlet, then pressed a power button on the charger.

That turned on a red light on the charger. The light indicated power was on. However, the dashcam’s monitor screen was blank.

I pressed a power button on the dashcam itself. Nothing happened.

Heat damage?

At first, I thought the summer heat may have damaged my dashcam or its memory card.

It was a hot week, with temperatures reaching the upper 90s. My car windshield was hot to the touch.

Although I didn’t leave the dashcam inside my hot, parked car, I couldn’t rule out heat damage.

Problem with memory card?

An Amazon customer review reported a similar problem.

The reviewer blamed his memory card. He said it stopped working during the hot summer and freezing winter.

Both he and I were using a Sandisk micro SD memory card.

While Rexing recommends using the SanDisk High Endurance Video Monitoring Micro SD Card, the reviewer disagrees. He suggests a Transcend High-Endurance card instead.

I went shopping for one at my local Staples store. It didn’t carry any Transcend card.

FAQ didn’t help

I also consulted Rexing’s official troubleshooting guide. It suggests charging the dashcam for up to 3 hours with the unit turned off.

I tried. It didn’t work.

Solution: Push Charger In

Frustrated, I was ready to email Rexing and ask for a new dashcam or $169.99 back.

Before I did that, I tried one last thing. Once again, I plugged in the charger. But this time, I pushed it hard into my car’s DC outlet, then wiggled the charger around.

I didn’t expect it to work. To my amazement, this did the trick! My dashcam finally turned on.

It turns out the dashcam’s charger was too loose.

Still, I wondered if the problem may be with my car’s power outlet. I wondered if it may be getting loose or worn out. As a test, I plugged in chargers for a phone and a GPS. Both worked fine.

So it was the dashcam charger’s fault.
